The Symposium for American Indian Languages is dedicated to discussion of the documentation & vitalization of the languages of the Americas.

The Symposium on American Indian Languages is a collaboration between the Native American Languages and Linguistics (NAMA) Program, the American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI), and the Linguistics Department at the University of Arizona. It is a primarily student-led conference. SAIL 2026 is taking place April 2-3 at the ENR2 building on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona.

Our Special Session Theme for 2026 is Innovative Pedagogies. Education lies at the core of language revitalization. Passing on our ancestral languages is done by fostering a relationship between a teacher and a learner. This is true whether this transference of knowledge takes place in a classroom, in a mentor-apprentice environment, or in the home.

Language pedagogy continues to evolve rapidly. Mentor-apprentice programs, immersive teaching, language nests, and other advancements in the field were the result of innovation by talented educators around the world. The next big advancement may be right around the corner.

SAIL brings together scholars, members of the Indigenous communities, native speakers, educators and language activists who are interested in sharing experiences and best practices on topics related to language documentation, conservation, reclamation vitalization. SAIL welcomes the active participation of Indigenous communities, Native language speakers, and those interested in reclamation, revitalization and preservation of their heritage languages and cultures.
