LING 424/524 Methods & Ethics in Linguistic Research Subtitle: Language Technology for Data Sovereignty (Amy F., Gus H. Powell and others)
Students enrolled in this course will develop a language technology adoption plan that conforms to community values, goals and resources. This course is open to students at any level, with no prerequisites. The course could be offered online, in person, or hybrid (supporting both online and in-person participants).

Introduction to descriptive linguistics for Native Americans; practical linguistic and social issues in Native American languages; phonetics and phonology; orthography; dialects and language change; classroom applications.

LING 445A/545A Introduction to Documenting North American Indian Sign Language (Melanie Cody)
The class will focus on phonological documentation and analysis of the signs used in the Native communities. Students will learn sign language phonology by using 5 parameters: handshape, location, movement, palm orientation, and non-manual markers. Students will be able to learn how to use SooSL, a software from SIL, Inc. to document their tribal signs. This course aims to bring back tribal signs for use in language revitalization. The course is open to all students, Native community members, and linguistics students with no prerequisites.

LING 421/521 The Language Learner’s Journey: Re-embodying land, language and ancestral oral tradition (Koodéik' / Joseph Marks)
This course addresses the basic foundations of language learning using oral language immersion principles, emphasizing communicative language immersion methodologies focusing on intergenerational language transmission and Indigenous ways of knowing.
