International Mother Language Day (IMLD)

In commemoration of the International Mother Language Day (February 21), the American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI) and the Native American Languages & Linguistics M.A. (NAMA) Program at the University of Arizona invite you to join the conversation with this virtual event.

Perseverance and Resilience in Indigenous Language Work in Times of Hardship

Five panelists from different countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, and the United States) will share their experiences with language work in the past year. The panel will discuss their approaches for virtual language work, the lessons learned (so far), and their perspectives for the future in community-based language work. The goal is to share and exchange what different Indigenous language communities/Tribes are doing to keep the language flourishing in such difficult times.

Panelists

  • Dr.  Altacy Correa Rubim is a member of the Kokama Tribe in the State of Amazonas, Brazil, and Professor at the Universidade Nacional de Brasilia, Brazil.

 

  • Daryn McKenny is the founder and director of the Miromaa Aboriginal Language and Technology Centre in Newcastle, Australia.

 

  • Eugene Alexis, is the director of Language in the Heritage & Language Department of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Alberta, Canada.

 

  • Luis Barragan is the Language Program Manager for the Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Arizona, United States
