Miromaa Workshop

Miromaa Workshop, April 15 & 16, 2020

Miromaa is the name of an Indigenous designed software that can be used for a variety of language revitalization projects. Created by an Aboriginal Language Center in Australia, Miromaa empowers Indigenous peoples to be directly involved with all aspects of language reclamation work. Miromaa can be used to create multi-media word lists, dictionaries, etc.

In this workshop you will get to explore all facets of using Miromaa for language documentation, exploring all of it's features including it's extensive use of multimedia and archiving abilities. You will use Audacity for sound recording and may be  producing dictionaries/word lists/lexicons and other learning resources.

You will be learning skills to use in all aspects of your activities to help stop the loss of language as well as gaining skills in the digitization of your language materials for future needs.

The instructor for the workshop is Daryn McKenny. Daryn helped establish and has been the General Manager of the Miromaa Aboriginal Language and Technology Centre since 2003. He also created the Miromaa program. Also assisting with the workshop will be Alison Soutar.

The workshop will be held at Tohono O'odham Community College. The workshop will begin at 9:30 am and conclude at 4:00 pm each day. Lunch will be provided. TOCC is located approximately 45 minutes west of Tucson.

The workshop is free but registration is required. Once your submit your registration you will be provided with more information to help  you prepare for the workshop. You will be required to bring a laptop and you will also be required to download several software programs. Please be sure that your laptops are able to accommodate  the downloads.
